SCLATER Charles

Ada & Charles Sclater & Family

When a war seemed a real possibility in Europe the family decided in 1914 it was time to start a new life and headed for Australia. Charles, Ada and Phyllis arrived in Fremantle on 17 March 1915 - on one of the last if not the last passenger ships before the sea lanes were closed due to the commencement of hostilities. They had come from a family which established some of the first nurseries in England.
Charles and Ada’s son Donald Sclater found work mostly in the mallet bark and sandalwood trade.

Charles and Ada went to join their son Donald and help him pioneer his farm for a few years.
Phyllis later recalled that they survived on kangaroo and rabbit during their time at Kwobrup..
Later the family moved into the Gnowangerup townsite (c1920).
